Edition Office’s Point Lonsdale House is comprised of a series of vaulted pavilions connected around a central living space, aligned to create a linear play on the coastal home aesthetic and maximise their proximity to the adjacent coast.

Point Lonsdale is located along a plentiful coastal frontage in Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. Proposed as a series of pavilions, the Point Lonsdale House is connected through a series of outdoor rooms, which allow for a subtle and natural integration of the landscape, while also opening up for passive heating, cooling and ventilation. Separated based on functionality, each of the spaces is an expression of its purpose, creating a sense of the cabin holiday home. The choice of materiality and the emphasis of exterior for all add to a heightened and uncompromised secondary home experience.

Fitting within an east-west orientation, the pavilions are strategically positioned in such a way as to allow for an optimised engagement with the northern landscape areas, and to be anchored from the southern side. The large openings are set back behind purpose-built under-croft structures to carve out deep and eaves, passively shaded by the structure above. These deep reveals also allow for additional seating elements where extrusions from the ground rise to form platforms at seating height. The overall flow between the spaces is calculated to allow for not only connected visual sight lines, but also breeze pathways, ultimately removing the need to for air-conditioning and other mechanical cooling mechanisms.

Each of the pavilions that comprise Point Lonsdale are clad identically, allowing for an almost elimination of hierarchy of form. The expressed vaulted ceiling form within allows for a physically heightened sense of space, while also being a welcome departure from the traditional domestic flat-ceiling condition. The series of private courtyards are interwoven throughout, together with sheltered decks, creating a tightly-woven and texturally-rich connection between the internal and external spaces. The warm textural, fully-encasing timber-clad internal spaces further add to this depth.
